- These are instructions on how to set up Hummingbird Exceed at home/dorm
and connect to Rutgers University remus/romulus/rhea/other servers.
- First things first, get Hummingbird Exceed, I suggest v8.0, its a little
bit nicer than v7.x (that is the version Rutgers currently uses (03/2005))
- Connection:
- Inside Rutgers Network (i.e.:
dorm students): DO NOT VPN, you
do not need to setup any other special connection type, your connection
is ready to go.
- Outside the Rutgers Network:
you can't connect to Rutgers servers unless you use a VPN
connection, you can also setup a ssh tunnel connection, which that's doesn't work as well.
- Install Exceed
- You're going to have to restart your computer once the install is finished.
- After the restart is done, go to the Exceed program group in you start
menu and select "Xconfig":

- Next Select "Communication":

- Make sure that you select "XDMCP
Query"
- Then select "Configure":

- For "Connect Host"
type in the server that you want to connect to (i.e: "remus.rutgers.edu")
- Leave all the other options as is.
- Close out of the "Communication"
settings.
- Next select "Screen
Definition":

- Make sure to select "Single"
under "Window Mode":
- Leave all other options as is.
- Close out "Screen
Definition"
- These are the only things that you need to setup.
- Now connect to the Rutgers VPN, and then open Exceed,
and you will be able to connect.
- Note: If you are connecting
from off-campus, the connection will be really slow, so don't worry if
it takes a long time for the login prompt to appear and if it takes a
long time for the X session to load, everything will work fine, it will
just take a little longer than usual. But once everything is loaded you
should be able to do your work just fine without any problems. I've programmed
for many CS classes from off-campus and worked off of remus.
