Mail Quota Management Policy

Students using mail services on Remus are given a limited amount of storage for their mail. The current quota for Remus is now set at 5 megabytes. The policy and procedures for users going over their alloted space is as follows...

1. When the user goes over his/her quota (the mail kept in their "INBOX") they will be sent an email within 24 hours. The email will let them know that they are over quota and that they have 14 days to rectify the situation (discussed below) The user's email will function normally during this time.

2. After 7 days of being over quota the user will be sent a second email, warning them that they have 7 more days to get under quota. The user's email will function normally during this time as well.

3. After 14 days of being over quota with no response the user's email will be disabled and an autoreply installed.

If step three has occurred the user will be informed in a fashion other than email that the situation needs to be addressed.

What do I do if I'm over quota?

1. Delete some mail.

2. Archive some mail. The 5 meg limit is only for mail (actually the size of your mail file in /var/mail) but your regular file quota is 50 megs. Copy mail you want to keep into another file, keep it in your regular file space, and trim your mail file.

How do I forward my mail to another email address?

If your Remus box is one you don't check often then you can have your mail forwarded to an account you do check and your Remus box will not fill up without you knowing about it. Just create a file in your home directory called ".forward". In this file list the email address you'd like your mail to be forwarded to.
