CS110 - Introduction to Computers and Applications
SPRING 2008 Software Extra-Credit Assignment

The Assignment Options Page

Due to Sakai before Monday, May 5
Evaluation: 10 points (extra-credit)

NOTES:

  1. If your extra-credit file is more than one page (i.e., PhotoShop, Quicken), you must send the file as a compressed (zipped) file. Click here for instructions on how to prepare and send a zipped file.
  2. File size is limited to 10MB; if your file is larger than this, you will have to modify it to take up less memory.
  3. Do not wait until the last minute to complete this assignment!   Sakai will most likely be experiencing heavy usage, and you may have difficulty with access and submission.   Do your work well before the deadline.

To earn ten extra-credit points this semester, choose one of the following software applications packages and submit the completed assignment to Sakai before Monday, May 5.
Note: This assignment will not be accepted after May 5;
there will be no extensions to the due date.
Do not wait until the last minute to complete this assignment!   Sakai will most likely be experiencing heavy usage, and you may have difficulty with access and submission.   Do your work well before the deadline.

The following assignments are mostly free form, but you must follow the theme and topic listed.  You will not earn the extra-credit points if your completed assignment does not meet the criteria stated.  Each assignment uses software available in the New Brusnwick computer labs (except Google Earth), but not otherwise taught in this class. You are expected to learn the software features on your own -- use the built-in help in the software, look for a book in your local library on the topic, etc.  Many of the features you will use can be found by looking on the menus, buttons, and icons visible in the window so don't hesitate to experiment!
Reminder: Experiment with a duplicate copy of your document, not the original.

To begin this assignnment, choose one of the following software packages: Quicken, PhotoShop, InDesign, or Maple, or download Google Earth from Google Options.   Choose a package in which you have an interest or may have an opportunity to use in the future.
Note: This is extra credit work. To complete the assignment, research the software on your own and complete the assignment with only minimal help from the TAs.  Preliminary information about each software package is available through the Software Package Hints link.

Except for Quicken, the software for this assignment is available on Macintosh and PC computers in the New Brunswick computer labs.  Quicken is available only on the macintosh computers. You may also do this assignment on your own computer if you have the software.

Extra-Credit Software Options
  1. Make a one-page newsletter using Adobe InDesign.  Your newsletter should have multiple columns, several pictures, and more than one article.  The topic of the newsletter is My Favorite Music.  The newsletter can contain articles on the origins of this type of music, well-known people and performers in this genre, www sites listing concerts, sites and stores where the music can be purchased.   Stick to the theme and include articles and/or images to make the newsletter more interesting.  You may also cite resources, contact persons, and www sites for more information.  Drop the finished newsletter to Sakai.

  2. For the PhotoShop assignment:
You now have two files, the original picture (Before)  and the modified picture (After).  Place the two files into a folder (remember, your file size is limited to 10MB), compress (zip) the file, and drop it to Sakai.
This assignment requires only two pictures: (1) the original (combined) image; (2) the modified image using four PhotoShop features.  If your work is more than two pages or the original (combined) image is not included, you will not receive credit for this assignment.
REMINDER: The PhotoShop file you have created has to be sent as a zipped (compressed) file. Click here for instructions on how to prepare and send a zipped file.

  3. Use Maple to solve five different integrals, show five derivatives of your choice, and graph two functions of your choice.
NOTE: The Maple file you have created has to be sent as a zipped (compressed) file. Click here for instructions on how to prepare and send a zipped file to Handin.

  4. Note: Quicken is available only on Macintosh computers.
Use Quicken to Create a budget for an out-of-state trip to attend a concert performance.  Include a starting amount and show expenses for transportation, lodging, food, souvenirs (including tax and/or discounts), miscellaneous expenses, etc.
NOTE: The Qucken file has to be sent as a zipped (compressed) file. Click here for instructions on how to prepare and send a zipped file.

  5. Download Google Earth to your computer from the Google Options site.  Select only Google Earth from the list displayed.  Plot the location of your home and five places nearby where you can purchase music by your favorite composer or performer.   Create and Save three different views of the map, showing different orientations and features (change zoom level, rotate, slant, show landmarks, etc.) to a folder, zip (compress) the folder,  and drop the folder to Sakai.
