CS110 - Introduction to Computers and Applications

Preparation: Use this list of worksheet features as a guide before beginning the spreadsheet assignment. If you find an item listed here that is unfamiliar (or maybe just makes you curious), look in the index of your reference book for more information and test the feature on a sample worksheet before incorporating it into your assingment.

Features to Consider in Creating a Worksheet

Can you create, save, and close a new worksheet document? Can you open a previously created worksheet?
Can you move around the worksheet, making different cells the active cell by using the cursor, arrow keys, and GoTo command? Do you know how to select a range of cells?
Do you know why numbers and labels appear on different sides of the cell after they are entered into the worksheet?
Can you enter formulas into the worksheet? Can you enter a formula which calculates a value using data from other cells in the worksheet? Can you incorporate parentheses into a formula to control the order of operations? Can you construct formulas by pointing to other cells?
Can you write formulas using the functions SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT?
Can you write formulas using the IF function?
Can you use the Fill Down and Fill Right commands to copy formulas to other cells?
Do you know how to copy formulas using Relative Cell Reference? Absolute Cell Reference? What is the difference in the appearance of a formula using relative cell reference compared with a formulas using absolute cell reference? What is the difference in the effect of copying formulas using relative cell reference compared with formulas copied using absolute cell reference?
Can you copy data to other parts of the worksheet using the Copy/Paste commands?

Editing the Worksheet

Can you delete data from a cell using the Delete key and the Clear command? Can you replace data in a cell after using the Delete key or Clear command? Can you replace data in a cell without using the Delete key or Clear command? Can you modify part of the data in a cell or part of a formula in the status line using the Edit command?
Do you know how to add rows and columns to the worksheet?
Do you know how to delete rows and columns from the worksheet?
Can you Sort columns of the worksheet into a different sequence; for example, in alphabetic order or numeric order? Do you know how to include related data from other columns when you sort specific columns of the worksheet? Do you know how to use secondary and tertiary keys to resolve ties when the worksheet is sorted?

Formatting the Worksheet

Can you change the appearance of data in a cell by incorporating font, style, and size options?
Can you adjust the alignment of data in a cell?
How many different formats can be selected to change the appearance of a number in a cell?
How to you display a number in Currency format? How do you display a number in Percent format? How do you display a number with No Decimal places?
Can you incorporate a Border around the left and right edge of a cell? How do you underline a range of cells? Can you emphasize a range of ten cells with a border around them?
How do you change the width of a column? How do you change the height of a row?

Creating Charts from Worksheet Data

Can you create a Pie Chart? Can you create Bar Charts, Line Charts, and other Series Charts included in Excel?
Do you know how to create a pie chart with labeled slices? Can you explode one of the slices in a pie chart? What other features of a pie chart can you change or modify?
What features of series charts can you change or modify? Can you Copy/Paste columns which are not next to each other to another part of the worksheet to construct a bar chart?

Printing the Worksheet

Do you know how to specify the range of cells before giving the Print command?
How do you include column headings and row numbers when you print the worksheet?
Can you print the worksheet without any grid lines visible?
Can you print the worksheet in Portrait (vertical) or Landscape (horizontal) mode?
Can you print charts and graphs created from data displayed in the worksheet?
